Academic Pricing Program

Object Domain Systems (ODS), makers of the ObjectDomain UML tool, receives numerous requests from colleges and universities who want to use ObjectDomain in the classroom. The goal of the ODS academic pricing program is to make the ObjectDomain UML tool available to university students at a price comparable to a text book - a 90% reduction in the list price of the product - while at the same time providing technical support for the product. To meet these goals, ODS and universities work in partnership to make the academic pricing program available to students.

The academic pricing program for ObjectDomain is intended for the classroom-learning environment. If your situation is outside the classroom, please review the Special Case Request section below.

Program Guidelines

The program works like this. Typically an individual instructor or a department makes a decision to use ObjectDomain as the UML modeling tool of choice in a class or a lab. The instructor typically wants one of two possible configurations:

1) Lab configuration - Load Object Domain onto a number of computers in a student lab, or

2)  Student configuration - Allows students in the class to use Object Domain at home on their personal computers.

Academic pricing for ObjectDomain is extremely simple and inexpensive. The cost is $95 per copy (a 90% discount off the normal list price). The educational product is a full commercial license for the latest version of the product without any restrictions on the capabilities or features of the product. The only difference between the commercial product and the educational product is the legend - Educational Use - which appears in the title bar and splash screen of the product.

For both student and lab configurations, copies of the software are downloaded through the normal channel on the web. In the lab configuration the university purchases a license for the collection of machines in the lab ($95 per machine). In the student configuration, students individually purchase their copies with a credit card.

To receive academic pricing, the university designates two people who work with ODS: The sponsor and the technical liaison:

• The sponsor is the person who requests academic pricing from ODS and manages the relationship. The sponsor is also in charge of making sure that all students using the product have a valid license. The sponsor is normally the instructor for the class.
• The technical liaison is the person who handles all technical support questions for the class. Students route their question to the technical liaison, and the liaison checks them for sanity before forwarding them to ODS technical support. The technical liaison receives all of the answers. This structure ensures that repeated or inappropriate questions from the class do not overwhelm the ODS technical support department. The technical liaison is often the TA for the class, but may also be the instructor.

How to Apply

To receive academic pricing, the sponsor should complete and submit the Educational Information form to establish an academic account. After the account has been established, the sponsor receives a key that allows students to purchase the product for individual use at the academic price. The instructor can also download a copy for lab use once the per-seat lab fee is paid by the university.

To take advantage of the ODS academic program, take the following steps:

• Determine whether you need the lab configuration, student configuration or both
• Determine who will act as the sponsor and the technical liaison for the program
• Have the sponsor complete and submit the Educational Information form
• If using a lab configuration, purchase the lab license. In the student configuration, students purchase their copies individually with a credit card.
• Download and install the software
• Ask technical support questions through the technical liaison

Special Case Request

Although we do not offer the full academic discounts for situations outside the classroom, we do offer some discounts for academic related situations. An example of this would be a funded research project or other graduate-type programs.
